Crisis Management and Crisis Communication:
What To Do When Someone
Damages Your Reputation

Your reputation - in many ways it can be considered one of your most valued assets.

It's what people use to judge who you are, and more importantly, whether they want to work with you, buy your services or products, or associate with you.

In essence, your good name is your brand and you sometimes have to defend it against others who attempt to damage it in some way.

damagesnametranscd02And in today's world of blogs, online forums, talk radio and uncontrolled media, it's easier than ever for others to damage your good name and your reputation.

In fact, in many cases, you can be totally innocent and still have others attempt to damage your reputation: perhaps for competitive reasons, maybe they're mad at you for some unrelated issue, or maybe you just happen to have the same name as someone else who deserves rebuke.

Those situations are as much (and sometimes far more serious) of a crisis as a fire, earthquake, or strike. You need to plan ahead, prepare for these situations and be able to extricate yourself from them when they happen.

So what do you do when someone damages your reputation?

Joan Stewart recently asked Judy Hoffman, an expert in community and media relations that, and a whole raft of related questions in a teleseminar titled What To Do When Someone Damages Your Good Name.

And got some powerful information in reply!

And now you can get that same excellent information for yourself, in either audio or transcription format.

Here's what you'll discover:

  • 3 probable situations which can damage your good name

  • How you are much more vunerable today than ever because of the Internet, and how to fight back against Internet-caused crises

  • How to determine what people are really saying about you online

  • How to know whether to take action or stay silent when negative things are being said about you on the Internet, and how acting too fast can actually worsen the damage

  • The stupidest thing you can do when you find someone saying negative things about you on the Internet

  • Why bloggers are a bigger risk than trained journalists

  • The one most important thing you need to do when you learn someone is damaging your good name...you'd probably never think of doing this and if you don't do it, the media will wonder why

  • A powerful weapon you can use that will help silence bloggers who are saying negative things about you

  • How to enlist your employees to help preserve your company's interests by acting as junior detectives

  • When to get your attorney involved

  • Whether you have should use in-house counsel in negative publicity situations or should to hire an outside firm

  • The lesson you can learn (and copy) from the way W.R. Grace handled the situation when the movie "A Civil Action" with John Travolta created bad publicity for their company

  • An example of how one famous institution mishandled rumors, costing themselves millions of dollars

  • Another example of a company that did almost everything wrong during and after a crisis, and how they paid early for it

  • What you must prove if you want to sue someone for libel and win

  • How to counter charges against you so the public, to the media and to your customers, believe in what you are saying

  • The one thing you must do if something associated with your company has resulted in harm, damage or injury and how doing this will help put you in a somewhat better light.

  • What you can do now to prepare for the day when a crisis hits... freeing you up to handle the crisis

  • Which media you should contact when time is of the essence and you need to set the record straight

  • 2 more "behind the scenes" tasks you should be doing whenever you suspect you might be in trouble... that can save you millions in damages and days of time later

  • How not understanding and using key messages can cause even more damage in a media interview

  • How to use "bridging" as a valuable verbal self-defense technique

  • A clever tactic that one company used to squash a negative "60 Minutes" investigation
